Aubrey Plaza has issued a public statement following the death of her husband, filmmaker Jeff Baena, who tragically died by suicide at the age of 47. In a heartfelt message shared with USA TODAY, Plaza described the situation as “an unimaginable tragedy” and expressed her gratitude for the support received. She further requested, “Please respect our privacy during this time.” Baena, known for his work on films such as “Life After Beth” and “The Little Hours”, was found deceased at his home in California last Friday, with the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner confirming the cause of death as suicide.

The couple, who began dating in 2011, married in 2021 and frequently collaborated on creative projects. Most recently, they worked together on the 2022 film “Spin Me Round,” which starred Plaza and Alison Brie. Plaza was scheduled to present at the Golden Globe Awards but did not attend, prompting director Brady Corbet to acknowledge her loss during his acceptance speech, saying, “Tonight, my heart is with Aubrey Plaza and Jeff’s family.”

Jeff Baena had a notable career, having co-written the acclaimed 2004 film “I Heart Huckabees” and directed “Joshy” in 2016. His works often addressed themes surrounding mental health. In a CNN interview discussing “Horse Girl,” he mentioned drawing on personal experiences with family members affected by mental illness.

Since his passing, numerous tributes have flooded in from friends and colleagues in the entertainment industry. “SNL” alum Molly Shannon, who starred in several of Baena's films, shared her condolences on social media, expressing her heartbreak. With Plaza focusing on privacy and healing amidst this painful time, the community continues to rally around her.
