Texas Officials have issued a warning regarding the New World Screwworm, a parasite that affects animals through open wounds.
This advisory, posted on December 30, alerts outdoor enthusiasts in South Texas to watch for signs of infestation.
The screwworm, which lays eggs in animals' nostrils, eyes, and mouths, poses serious health risks to livestock and pets.
Historically, the species was once prevalent in the U.S., causing significant economic losses before eradication efforts.
To prevent infestations, outdoor enthusiasts should clean and cover wounds and use insect repellant when outdoors.
