OTTAWA, Ontario — Teddy Stiga scored on a breakaway at 8:04 of 3-on-3 overtime, securing a 4-3 victory for the United States over Finland in the World Junior Hockey Championship final on Sunday night.
The Boston College forward, assisted by Denver’s Zeev Buium, beat Finnish goalie Petteri Rimpinen through the legs to clinch the championship. This victory marks the USA's second consecutive title and their seventh overall, avenging a previous 4-3 loss to Finland in the group stage.
During a tense match, the Americans rallied from a two-goal deficit in the second period. Brandon Svoboda and Cole Hutson, both Boston University teammates, contributed crucial goals late in the second period, with Svoboda cutting the deficit to 3-2 and Hutson tying the game with just 29 seconds left.
Michigan State’s goalie Trey Augustine was instrumental, making 20 saves throughout the game. Finland initially took control with goals from Jesse Kiiskinen, Tuomas Uronen, and Emil Pieniniemi, leading them to a 3-1 advantage before the US mounted their comeback.
In the third-place game, Czechia emerged victorious over Sweden, winning 3-2 in a dramatic shootout. Next year’s tournament is scheduled to be held in Minneapolis and St. Paul, Minnesota.
