Sushi restaurateurs in Tokyo have made headlines by paying a staggering $1.3 million (207 million yen) for a bluefin tuna at the annual New Year auction held at Toyosu Fish Market. This price, which is the second highest ever recorded since 1999, was secured by the Onodera Group, known for its Michelin-starred establishments.

The tuna, weighing 276 kilograms (608 pounds) and approximately the size of a motorbike, is intended to bring good fortune, as stated by Onodera official Shinji Nagao, who expressed hopes that consumers would enjoy the delicacy and "have a wonderful year." This win continues a five-year streak of the group claiming the top prize at the prestigious auction, having paid 114 million yen last year.

This year’s auction brought notable attention, especially after the pandemic had seen prices plummet. The highest historic price was recorded in 2019, when "Tuna King" Kiyoshi Kimura bid on a 278-kilogram bluefin for 333.6 million yen. In addition to tuna, the auction featured other luxury seafood, including Hokkaido sea urchins, which also attained a record price.
