Ann Telnaes, a Pulitzer Prize-winning cartoonist, has resigned from The Washington Post after the editorial team rejected her cartoon depicting owner Jeff Bezos kneeling before Donald Trump.
Telnaes described the censorship as a "game changer" for her relationship with the newspaper, marking the first time her work was killed for its viewpoint.
In her Substack post, she emphasized the potential dangers this poses for free press, expressing concerns over billionaire owners interfering with editorial independence.
The rejected cartoon also featured tech giants Mark Zuckerberg and Patrick Soon-Shiong, visually criticizing the influence of billionaires in shaping media narratives.
David Shipley, the Post's opinions editor, defended the rejection, stating it was based on editorial judgment against redundancy rather than censorship. However, critics point to increased scrutiny of press freedom under Bezos's ownership.
