Israel has warned that the fragile ceasefire with Hezbollah could collapse if the Iran-backed group fails to withdraw beyond the Litani River, a key condition outlined in the truce agreement. The ceasefire, implemented on November 27, was initially meant to halt hostilities for at least 60 days while both parties enacted necessary withdrawals and demilitarization.

Recent statements from Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz highlight ongoing frustrations with Hezbollah's compliance. Katz emphasized, "If Hezbollah does not withdraw beyond the Litani River, there will be no agreement." He reiterated Israel's dedication to enforcing the ceasefire, aiming for the safe return of northern residents disrupted by the conflict. As part of the truce, Hezbollah fighters were expected to retreat 40 kilometers from the Israeli border, and the area should only host the Lebanese military and UN peacekeeping forces before the upcoming January 26 deadline (CNN).

However, accusations of violations have been rampant from both sides. On January 4, the UN Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) accused Israel of a "flagrant violation" of the 2006 Security Council resolution. The force reported an incident where an Israeli military bulldozer destroyed UNIFIL property while removing markers that delineate the withdrawal line between Israel and Lebanon. UNIFIL demanded restraint from all parties involved to prevent further escalation (Le Monde).

In response, Hezbollah leader Naim Qassem stated the group is prepared to react to Israeli violations before the completion of the 60-day period, suggesting that their patience may be tested. "We have said that we are giving an opportunity to prevent Israeli violations and to implement the agreement," Qassem said (India Times).

The delicate nature of the truce has led to tit-for-tat exchanges, with both sides engaging in military operations in southern Lebanon. UNIFIL has reported that Israeli forces have violated the ceasefire agreement approximately 100 times since it took effect. Amid these tensions, it is crucial for both parties to adhere to the terms of the ceasefire to avoid further violence in an already turbulent region (CNN).
