When the Phone Rings is a Korean-language thriller exploring intense themes of communication, love, and toxicity in relationships.
The K-drama features a unique narrative driven by kidnappings, murders, and mistaken identities, making it a standout example of the "makjang" genre.
Main characters Paik Sa-eon and Hong Hee-joo navigate a complicated relationship that evolves through secret phone calls during a kidnapping.
The series concludes with the couple finally finding happiness in a genuine relationship after overcoming past traumas and obstacles.
Despite its happy ending, the series has drawn criticism for perpetuating the magical cure trope regarding disabilities among its characters.
