China has achieved a historic milestone by performing the world’s first satellite-based surgeries, potentially transforming trauma care, especially in combat zones.
The operations were conducted using the Apstar-6D broadband satellite, located 36,000 kilometers above Earth, demonstrating advanced satellite communication capabilities.
Doctors from the People’s Liberation Army General Hospital successfully performed five surgeries remotely, including procedures on patients' liver and gallbladder located in Beijing.
Data from each surgical movement travelled a combined distance of nearly 150,000 kilometers, showcasing a significant technical feat in remote medical technology.
This groundbreaking achievement is set to pave the way for global 24/7 coverage of surgical interventions, impacting healthcare accessibility in remote locations.
