BEIJING (AP) — A tragic fire at a food market in northern China on Saturday resulted in the deaths of at least eight people and injured fifteen others, as reported by state media sources.
The blaze broke out at the Liguang market in the city of Zhangjiakou around midday and was largely controlled by 2:00 p.m. (0600 GMT), according to AP News and the Guardian. A government official from the Qiaoxi District, where the market resides, indicated that the cause of the fire is currently being investigated.
Traditional markets such as Liguang are often crowded as shoppers seek lower prices compared to supermarkets. Potential fire sources in these markets include gas bottles, charcoal for roasting meat, or discarded cigarettes, compounded by failing infrastructure like aging underground gas lines.
Zhangjiakou, located in Hebei province near Beijing, was also a host city for events during the 2022 Winter Olympic Games.
