DALLAS — A tragic fire that erupted at a shopping center in Dallas on Friday morning resulted in the death of more than 500 animals, primarily small birds. The incident took place at the Plaza Latina pet shop located in Northwest Dallas. According to Dallas Fire-Rescue spokesperson Jason Evans, the 579 animals succumbed to smoke inhalation, despite the flames never reaching their cages.
Other deceased animals included chickens, hamsters, two dogs, and two cats. The blaze, classified as a two-alarm fire, required approximately 45 firefighters and consumed nearly two hours to extinguish.
Evans stated, “While DFR personnel did search and attempt rescue, all animals in the shop unfortunately perished due to smoke inhalation.” Fortunately, no personnel or customers were injured during this incident. The shopping center, which housed numerous small businesses, suffered significant structural damage, including a partially collapsed roof.
The shopping center branded itself as a venue where patrons could enjoy various Latin culinary and retail offerings. Following the tragic event, a heartfelt post in Spanish was shared on their Facebook page, urging the community for prayers for local families affected by the fire.
The cause of the fire remains unknown, and an investigation is currently underway. For more information, visit India Times and HuffPost.
