The administration of President Joe Biden has informed Congress about a proposed $8 billion arms sale to Israel, a move aimed at continuing Washington's support for its ally during the ongoing war in Gaza, which has resulted in tens of thousands of casualties. The deal, which is contingent on approval from various congressional committees, includes munitions for fighter jets and attack helicopters, as well as artillery shells and small-diameter bombs, according to reports from USA Today and Reuters.

Despite months of protests calling for an arms embargo against Israel, U.S. policy has largely remained unaffected. Earlier, in August, the U.S. approved a $20 billion military package to Israel. This arms assistance is presented as a necessary measure to bolster Israel's defense mechanisms against Iran-backed groups like Hamas in Gaza, Hezbollah in Lebanon, and the Houthis in Yemen.

International criticism has mounted against Washington, particularly concerning its unwavering support for Israel amid severe humanitarian crises, which have seen nearly the entire population of Gaza displaced. The Gaza health ministry estimates the death toll to exceed 45,000, with many feared missing under rubble.

Diplomatic initiatives aimed at resolving the 15-month conflict, sparked by an attack from Hamas on October 7, 2023, have not yielded significant results. Israel's military actions have led to widespread devastation, compelling the U.S. to veto U.N. resolutions advocating for a ceasefire.

As President Biden prepares for a transition of power to Republican President-elect Donald Trump on January 20, both leaders have shown strong support for Israel's military strategies.
