Chilean President Gabriel Boric has made a groundbreaking journey to the South Pole, becoming the first leader from Latin America to set foot in this remote region. His visit, marked as Operation Pole Star III, is a pivotal moment for Chilean sovereignty in Antarctica, according to BBC.

Accompanied by scientists, military commanders, and cabinet members, Boric officially arrived at the Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station, a US research facility. “This is a milestone for us,” Boric stated while highlighting the importance of the journey towards reaffirming Chile’s territorial claims.

During his visit, Boric emphasized Chile's commitment to scientific research in Antarctica, particularly focusing on climate change and environmental monitoring. His government aims to extend research efforts beyond the northern regions, addressing potential pollutants affecting the Antarctic environment.

Over the past century, many nations, including Chile, have laid claim to parts of Antarctica; however, these claims are not widely recognized internationally.
