Detroit reported a drop in homicides, reaching their lowest levels since the mid-1960s, with approximately 203 homicides in 2024.
This reduction signifies a decline of 49 homicides from the previous year and showcases the fewest incidents since 1965.
Other violent crimes, including nonfatal shootings and carjackings, also saw substantial decreases, highlighting a broader national trend of reduced violent crime.
Mayor Mike Duggan attributed these improvements to strategic partnerships and community programs like ShotStoppers, which aims to reduce violence through community engagement.
The city has enhanced its law enforcement presence, adding 340 police officers over the last two years to help maintain public safety.
