GENEVA, N.Y. — Mary Ann Krupsak, who made history as the first woman elected to statewide office in New York as lieutenant governor in 1974, has passed away at the age of 92. She died at her home on Seneca Lake, as reported in an obituary published online.

A lifelong Democrat, Krupsak served one term alongside Governor Hugh Carey. She later attempted to replace him in the 1978 gubernatorial primary but was unsuccessful. Born in Schenectady, she earned her bachelor's degree from the University of Rochester, a master's from Boston University, and a law degree from the University of Chicago.

Krupsak's political career began when she was elected to the New York State Assembly in 1968, and she later served in both the Assembly and Senate. One of her notable contributions during her term was her advocacy for Radio City Music Hall, which she helped secure National Historic Landmark status.

Current New York Governor Kathy Hochul, who volunteered on Krupsak's campaign, expressed her condolences on social media, reflecting, "I was proud to follow in her footsteps forty years later." After leaving public office, Krupsak continued her career as a senior partner at Krupsak & Mahoney and was a co-founder of another law firm.
