Jessie Diggins kicked off her pursuit for a third Tour de Ski title with a thrilling win in the 1.4km freestyle sprint in Toblach, Italy.
After three years without a sprint victory, Diggins expressed her happiness and surprise at the result.
She secured the victory by overtaking Finland’s Jasmi Joensuu by 0.31 seconds, marking a personal milestone as Toblach was where she earned her first podium.
This victory gives Diggins a seven-second lead going into the next stage of the competition and entitles her to wear the sprint leader bib.
The event also saw the US cross-country ski team performing strongly, with eight athletes reaching the sprint heats.
