Authorities have begun evacuating residents to temporary shelters, as confirmed by both state broadcasters and government geological officials.
A video released by the Ethiopian Geological Institute shows smoke and dust rising from the Awash Fentale volcano in the Afar region.
Shiferaw Teklemariam, from the Ethiopian Disaster Risk Management Commission, stated that while it is premature to declare an eruption, safety measures are being prioritized.
The affected area, approximately 165 km from Addis Ababa, has also faced recent earthquakes and tremors.
