MANILA: In a significant political maneuver, Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has officially removed Vice President Sara Duterte from the National Security Council (NSC), as revealed in an executive order dated December 30 and announced on January 3. This decision follows escalating tensions between the two leaders, particularly triggered by alleged threats made by Duterte against Marcos's life. The order, signed by Executive Secretary Lucas Bersamin, also eliminates the membership of former presidents from the NSC, restructuring it to include only key legislative, defense, and cabinet officials.

Bersamin stated that the reorganization aims to enhance the council's capability to "uphold and protect national security and sovereignty." He emphasized that the Vice President is currently deemed “not relevant” to the council's responsibilities, allowing Marcos the discretion to appoint additional members as necessary (Reuters).

The unfolding drama comes amid serious allegations against Duterte, who is being investigated for reportedly suggesting to contract an assassin to kill Marcos and family members should she herself be targeted. Duterte later claimed her statements were misinterpreted but has not provided further clarification (The Guardian).

Since her rise to power in 2022 in alliance with Marcos, Duterte's position has deteriorated dramatically, now facing multiple impeachment complaints regarding alleged misappropriation of government funds. These developments come just ahead of crucial mid-term elections, drawing significant attention as the political landscape shifts (India Times).
