Avalanche Coach Expresses Frustration Over Lack of Whistle for Injured Goalie Scott Wedgewood

DENVER (AP) — Colorado Avalanche coach Jared Bednar expressed considerable frustration after a recent game where officials did not blow the whistle when goaltender Scott Wedgewood was injured. The incident occurred during the third period against the Buffalo Sabres, leading to a controversial goal that Bednar felt jeopardized player safety.

In the game, Wedgewood fell to the ice following a collision involving Sabres forward Zach Benson, who, after being pushed, crashed into Wedgewood's right leg. Despite the goalkeeper being down, no whistle was blown, allowing the Sabres to score. Bednar declared, “When the goalie’s hurt, you blow the whistle,” underlining his belief that such safety measures should have been urgently applied during the chaotic situation. He emphasized, “By the time that puck got cycled behind the net, it should have been called. You’re doing it for every other player on the ice, but you’re not going to do it for the goalie? Makes no sense to me” (AP News).

Following the game, Bednar had discussions with the NHL to express his concerns. “We had a good discussion on it today... I think they understood my thoughts. I understand theirs,” he stated. Although the exchange provided some clarity, it did not lead to a total agreement on the officiating decisions made during the match. Bednar remarked that “there's some differences of opinion,” yet recognized the importance of keeping goalies safe.

Wedgewood's injury has been classified as week-to-week since the incident, initially raising fears of a high ankle sprain that could sideline him for an extended period. Bednar said, “We’re hoping for the best side of that timeline,” indicating hope that Wedgewood will recover quickly. The Avalanche have already been coping with several injury setbacks, including that of Valeri Nichushkin and captain Gabriel Landeskog, alongside others (AP News).

In Wedgewood's absence, the team plans to depend heavily on newly-acquired goaltender Mackenzie Blackwood, who has demonstrated solid performance since joining the Avalanche. Blackwood was quick to heal and stated, “You’ve got to be ready to go in situations like that.” Additionally, Trent Miner from the AHL's Colorado Eagles has been called up as backup as the Avalanche navigate through this challenging season.

As the Avalanche continue their campaign, Bednar remains hopeful and confident in the team's ability to rally despite the injuries. The prospect of their complete roster returning excites him as he concluded, “I’d like to see what our team looks like” with everyone healthy.
