FDA Issues Fourth Oyster Recall in 18 Days Amid Norovirus Outbreaks in Washington

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued its fourth oyster recall in less than a month due to a significant rise in norovirus cases. This advisory, released Thursday, warns consumers against eating certain oysters harvested from the Hammersley Inlet growing area in Washington, which may pose serious health risks, particularly for individuals with weakened immune systems. The oysters in question were gathered by Ruco’s Shellfish between December 2 and December 17 and have been distributed primarily across Washington and Oregon, with possible distribution to other states (Forbes).

The FDA's warning follows a troubling national trend, with an alarming count of 495 reported norovirus outbreaks across 14 states, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The health agency emphasizes that oysters contaminated with norovirus can cause severe illness even if they look, smell, and taste normal. Notably, at least 80 individuals fell sick after consuming oysters at a food event in Los Angeles.

Norovirus is widely recognized as the leading cause of foodborne illness in the U.S., characterized by symptoms such as projectile vomiting, diarrhea, and abdominal cramps, typically developing within 12 to 48 hours of exposure (Independent). The CDC attributes around 900 deaths annually to norovirus, primarily affecting older adults.

The FDA continues to monitor the situation closely and advises restaurants and retailers with potentially contaminated oysters to discard or return them to distributors for proper disposal. They are working with state authorities to track the distribution of these oysters and provide necessary assistance during their investigation.

In light of the increasing health risks, the CDC has reiterated the importance of precautionary measures, such as thorough handwashing, proper cooking of shellfish, and cleaning contaminated surfaces.

As of now, a total of 12 recalls have been issued by the FDA within the past year concerning oysters, indicating a persistent concern over norovirus outbreaks. This ongoing situation underscores the imperative for consumers to stay informed and cautious regarding seafood consumption, especially during the winter months when norovirus cases tend to escalate (Forbes).
