Park rangers in Hawaii have reiterated dangers related to volcano tourism after a toddler approached the edge of a 400ft cliff near Kīlauea.
The incident occurred during an eruption that began on December 23, with hazardous conditions including toxic gases and unstable ground.
Park superintendent Rhonda Loh emphasized the importance of responsible behavior when visiting, stating, “National parks showcase nature’s splendor but they are not playgrounds.”
The child wandered away from family, almost resulting in a fatal fall, highlighting safety challenges near active volcanic sites.
Travel safety experts recommend researching volcano sites and understanding hazards before visiting to ensure safe experiences.
