DENVER (AP) — Denver has officially secured the 16th franchise in the National Women's Soccer League (NWSL) with a record $110 million expansion fee, as reported by AP News. This fee is more than twice the previous record for NWSL expansion and represents the largest amount ever paid for a U.S. women’s professional sports team.
The franchise bid, led by IMA Financial Group CEO Robert Cohen, submitted its initial payment to the league recently. Denver emerged as a winner over bids from Cleveland and Cincinnati, which were also in contention for the franchise, as confirmed by NWSL Commissioner Jessica Berman in November.
Denver is set to join the league alongside Boston, which will also debut in 2026, with Boston having agreed to an expansion fee of $53 million—the same as Reuters newcomer Bay FC.
The group behind the Denver franchise includes prominent figures such as former Obama administration official Ben Hubbard and ex-NWSL player Jordan Angeli, among others. They have indicated that the team will temporarily play at another venue while a soccer stadium is being developed. For more on this development, click on The Guardian.
