New York City has plunged into controversy as former NYPD Chief Jeffrey Maddrey has been suspended amid serious allegations of sexual misconduct. On Thursday, Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch announced via her X account that Maddrey's suspension comes as internal investigations are conducted by the NYPD's Internal Affairs Bureau in conjunction with federal authorities.
Authorities executed search warrants at several locations, including Maddrey's home, following accusations that he demanded sexual favors from a subordinate in exchange for overtime opportunities. This troubling claim was spotlighted in a federal Equal Employment Opportunity Commission complaint filed by the alleged victim.
Maddrey resigned on December 20, but the resignation's effective date has been complicated by the ongoing investigations. According to Tisch, “At my direction, the Internal Affairs Bureau of the New York City Police Department is working with law enforcement authorities to investigate allegations against former Chief of Department Jeffrey Maddrey” (NY Times).
The Manhattan District Attorney's Office is also conducting inquiries into the allegations, which have prompted public outrage. Maddrey's lawyer insists that the relationship was consensual and part of a “misguided deflection” on the accuser’s part, claiming she had engaged in overtime abuse (ABC News).
This situation raises significant concerns about conduct within the ranks of the NYPD and remains a developing story as more information is awaited.
