Helsinki’s main sports and entertainment venue is anticipated to reopen in spring 2025 after being closed since February 2022 due to sanctions against its Russian owners.
The arena, formerly known as Helsinki Ice Hall, was left disused, without utilities, as its owners were subject to EU and US sanctions following the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
In November 2024, a deal was reached with Trevian, a Finnish real estate company, to purchase the arena, pending approval from local and EU authorities.
City officials highlighted a significant economic impact due to the arena's closure, which resulted in an estimated €400m loss in revenue from local businesses.
If final approvals are granted, the venue aims to return to being a premier location for cultural events and international sports, likened to Madison Square Garden.
