At least ten people have been killed and thirty injured after a vehicle drove into a crowd on New Orleans' renowned Canal and Bourbon Street.

The New Orleans emergency preparedness agency, NOLA Ready, reported the fatalities and advised the public to steer clear of the area due to ongoing emergency response activities.

The local police confirmed their response to what was labeled a mass casualty incident. Reports indicate the vehicle crashed into the large crowd during the early hours of New Year's Day, resulting in significant chaos.

Earlier witness accounts noted that a truck had sped into the crowd, and shortly after the collision, the driver reportedly exited the vehicle and began firing a weapon, leading police to return fire (according to South China Morning Post).

AP News confirmed that the police are currently managing the scene and urged citizens to avoid the area as emergency services address the situation.

Further details will emerge as investigations continue.
