The FBI reports it has successfully disrupted an alleged plot targeting the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC), which was purportedly intended to occur on the first night of Hanukkah. A total of 14 federal charges have been brought against Forrest Kendall Pemberton, who allegedly sought to scout AIPAC's offices in Florida before planning to return armed.
According to court documents reviewed by CBS News and corroborated by The Guardian, Pemberton was traced to a hotel located approximately two miles from AIPAC’s known address in Plantation, Florida, suggesting his intent to carry out a serious crime.
Pemberton's detailed plans included intentions to "kill, injure, harass, and intimidate" individuals affiliated with the pro-Israel advocacy group. Although the charging documents do not specifically name AIPAC as the intended target, they correspond closely with the group’s mission statement and available public information.
On December 22, Pemberton reportedly accessed locations near AIPAC's offices to prepare for his attack, before being arrested in a rideshare vehicle in Tallahassee on December 25, when he was found with three firearms, including an AR-style rifle. Prosecutors allege that his chilling admissions to officers indicated a willingness to perpetrate a mass casualty event followed by suicide, stating, "If caught, that was a way out," signifying grave intent.
The alarming situation escalated when a family member alerted authorities after discovering distressing notes where Pemberton expressed anti-authority sentiment. The Justice Department has linked his motivations to a perceived political discontent and a desire to "close the loop" on his grievances. In the aftermath of the arrest, the spokesperson for AIPAC confirmed their serious stance toward the threat, emphasizing collaboration with law enforcement and commitment to their objectives amidst extremist activities.
Pemberton remains in custody, awaiting a court hearing scheduled for the upcoming week in Gainesville, Florida. AIPAC has expressed gratitude to the FBI for their efforts in thwarting the potential violence aimed at them as they continue their work to strengthen relations with Israel.
