  • The **Reserve Bank of India (RBI)** announced that **98.12%** of Rs 2,000 notes withdrawn are now back in the banking system.
  • As of **December 31, 2024**, only **Rs 6,691 crore worth** of these notes remain in public circulation.
  • This marks a significant decrease from a total of **Rs 3.56 lakh crore** in notes that existed when they were demonetised on **May 19, 2023**.
  • The facility to exchange or deposit these notes was available at bank branches until **October 7, 2023**, but is still open at **RBI issue offices**.
  • Despite their withdrawal, the Rs 2,000 notes remain **legal tender** and can be sent via **India Post** for deposit.
