  • The device was discovered in a conference room used for confidential discussions.
  • OpenAI has stated there is no evidence of sensitive data being accessed.

An employee of OpenAI, identified as 35-year-old Abdulrahman Alfozan, was arrested on October 9, accused of secretly installing a recording device in one of the company's conference rooms located in San Francisco. The device was discovered on September 30, prompting OpenAI to report the incident to the FBI, which subsequently initiated an investigation into the matter, according to CBS News and Le Monde.

Alfozan had worked at OpenAI, a leader in artificial intelligence, since July 2025 and was alleged to have concealed a USB recording device within toilet paper and placed it into a television in a frequently used executive conference room. This room was used for discussions involving sensitive and proprietary company information, indicating the serious implications of the alleged incident, reported India Times and Le Monde.

The FBI indicated that Alfozan was caught on security camera footage near the conference room prior to the discovery of the device and had searched for details regarding OpenAI's office layouts and meeting schedules through a productivity tool. Investigators found that a chatbot account linked to his spouse also conducted searches related to audio recording technology, as noted by India Times and CBS News.

Authorities have charged Alfozan with using or attempting to use an electronic device to intercept oral communications, which could lead to a prison sentence of up to five years. Despite the severity of the allegations, OpenAI stated there have been no indications that sensitive information was compromised or accessed, according to India Times and Le Monde.

OpenAI has confirmed that it utilized its own AI technology to analyze the hidden device and identify the employee who had placed it, showcasing an advanced response to security threats. The FBI's investigation remains ongoing, emphasizing the serious nature of the breach and its implications for national security concerning artificial intelligence innovations, as highlighted by CBS News and India Times.
