South Africa’s deputy police chief, Shadrack Sibiya, has resigned as he faces serious allegations including sexual offenses and corruption, with his resignation submitted at the start of a disciplinary hearing on Monday. Police spokespersons have noted that his departure will be treated as a dishonourable discharge given the ongoing proceedings against him, according to BBC and Africanews.
Sibiya has been in custody since last month after being arrested on charges of grooming a minor and rape. He insists that he did not engage in any such criminal behavior, claiming that any interactions with the 18-year-old woman were consensual. His application for bail has been postponed until October 13, according to Al Jazeera and Africanews.
The allegations against Sibiya also include accusations of receiving gifts and money from criminals, a matter currently under investigation by a judicial commission scrutinizing police conduct and corruption in South Africa. Despite the serious charges, Sibiya has denied ever accepting illicit gifts, maintaining his stance throughout the inquiry process, according to BBC and Al Jazeera.
