Trump Secures Deal with Putin for Russian Diesel Supply to Alleviate Soaring Fuel Prices

  • Trump announces a deal with Putin to release millions of tonnes of diesel fuel to help lower rising prices.
  • The agreement includes 300,000 tonnes immediately, followed by 1.8 million more over subsequent months.
  • This marks a significant shift in U.S. energy policy amid ongoing sanctions against Russia.
  • Diesel prices in the U.S. have surged, affecting costs across multiple sectors.
  • The U.S. Treasury issued a temporary license to allow for this new diesel supply.

U.S. President Donald Trump announced on Friday that he has secured an agreement with Russian President Vladimir Putin for the release of diesel fuel into the global market, aiming to combat rising energy costs amid the ongoing impacts of the war with Iran. Trump stated that Russia will immediately supply over 300,000 tonnes of diesel, with an additional 500,000 tonnes expected in November and 1 million tonnes thereafter. He also indicated that Russia could deliver an additional 3 million tonnes "within a short period" following this initial supply, according to BBC, CBS News, and Los Angeles Times.

The announcement comes at a crucial time as the U.S. is experiencing historically high diesel prices, currently averaging $6.28 per gallon, having risen significantly since the escalation of the conflict in 2022. The Trump administration previously imposed strict sanctions on Russian energy operations; however, the new agreement reflects a significant policy shift intended to ease pressure on American consumers, particularly before the upcoming midterm elections, as highlighted by Al Jazeera and Le Monde.

In addition to the diesel supply, the U.S. Treasury Department has issued a temporary license to allow Russian diesel to flow to markets until April 2027, representing a more extended waiver than previously granted, which raises concerns about the effectiveness of sanctions aimed at crippling Russia's energy revenue. Critics, including Rep. Don Beyer, have expressed outrage at Trump's decision to ease sanctions, questioning the implications this may have on the U.S. strategy regarding Russia, as detailed by India Times and Los Angeles Times.
