British police have charged 24-year-old Teddy Young, a member of the Royal Navy, with offenses under the UK’s National Security Act. He allegedly obtained protected information and prepared to disclose it to benefit an unnamed foreign power. Young will appear in Westminster Magistrates' Court following his arrest at home in Bedfordshire, according to Reuters and BBC.
Commander Helen Flanagan, Head of Counter Terrorism Policing London, described the charges as “very serious” and emphasized collaboration with the Ministry of Defence to mitigate risks associated with the case. Police noted that the charges are not related to a recent incident at RAF Fairford where U.S. officials mentioned a potential drone attack, as stated by Al Jazeera and India Times.
The charges cover allegations from November 2024 to May 2025, including retaining sensitive UK defense information and preparing to benefit a foreign power. Reports suggest Young translated messages into Russian and sought online avenues for information submission. As the first UK military member charged under the National Security Act 2023, he faces further court proceedings on October 16, according to BBC and India Times.
