US authorities have arrested 30-year-old James Cody Bryant in Washington for his alleged role in the February school shooting in Tumbler Ridge, British Columbia. He faces a charge of conspiracy to murder persons in a foreign country, a serious offense that could lead to a life sentence, according to the Department of Justice. The shooting, which resulted in the deaths of eight individuals, including six children, was carried out by 18-year-old Jessie Van Rootselaar, who later died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound during the incident, according to BBC, Reuters, and Al Jazeera.
Bryant is accused of providing technical advice and financial assistance to Van Rootselaar leading up to the tragic event, reportedly including funds for shoes to be worn during the attack. Law enforcement officials revealed that Bryant also had agreements in place to live stream the shooting to maximize its notoriety. "Without Bryant's misplaced loyalty and willingness to operate the live stream, we don't ultimately know if the shooter would have gone through with the crime," stated Mike Herrington, an FBI special agent, highlighting the gravity of Bryant's actions and decisions prior to the event, according to Reuters and Al Jazeera.
The online communications between Bryant and Van Rootselaar reportedly took place over platforms like Discord, where they discussed how to conduct the shooting and generate maximum attention. Following the shooting, several lawsuits were initiated, notably against OpenAI, alleging that their ChatGPT technology failed to alert authorities regarding Van Rootselaar's threats made prior to the attack. This legal action aims to compel the tech company to improve its safety protocols around monitoring potentially dangerous users, which has drawn criticism after the shooting incident, as reported by BBC and Al Jazeera.
