Kenya has confirmed its first-ever case of Ebola, with a Kenyan citizen arriving from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and subsequently dying in Nairobi. Health Minister Aden Duale reported that the patient, who had lived in DRC for the past seven years, fell ill a month ago and passed away shortly after arriving in Kenya on October 3, having undergone treatment in several hospitals in DRC, according to Reuters and BBC.
The man had traveled overland to Uganda before flying to Nairobi, where he was screened and later confirmed positive for the Ebola Bundibugyo virus. Duale emphasized that "only one test has turned positive" among the 28 contacts identified, which include family members and health workers. He reassured the public, stating, "I wish to assure the public not to panic, as all systems are in place to mitigate the spread of the disease," according to Africanews.
The DRC is experiencing a severe outbreak, which has resulted in over 4,000 deaths this year alone. The outbreak, declared in mid-May, continues to threaten regional health security, and health officials are heightenedly vigilant to manage and contain further cases in Kenya and neighboring countries, as noted by Reuters, BBC, and Africanews.
