The crash occurred around 2:30 p.m. local time, and the cause is under investigation, according to statements from the U.S. military and local district officials in Bitburg-Pruem, which oversees the area surrounding the base, according to CBS News and Indiatimes.

The crashed F-16 was part of a flight involving four such aircraft returning from a routine training mission when the incident occurred. The other three jets successfully diverted to Ramstein Air Base, according to military reports and local news agencies.
