A tragic bus crash in Cape Verde on Saturday has resulted in the deaths of at least 25 people, most being children and teenagers, according to Africanews and Reuters.

The bus, carrying 32 passengers, plunged into a deep ravine on a mountain road after veering off during a return trip from a volcanic crater excursion on Fogo Island. The driver, who organized the annual outing as a gift for schoolchildren, was also among those killed, reports South China Morning Post and Africanews.

Emergency crews worked continuously to rescue victims trapped in the wreckage, which was located in a hard-to-reach rocky area. Reports indicate that several others were injured, with some in serious condition at the hospital, according to Africanews and South China Morning Post.

In the wake of the crash, President José Maria Neves has declared two days of national mourning and attended the funerals of several victims, highlighting the national tragedy this incident represents.
