  • Israeli settler Yinon Levi has been indicted for the killing of Palestinian activist Awdah Hathaleen.
  • This is the first indictment of a settler for killing a Palestinian in nearly three years.
  • The indictment follows a rise in settler violence against Palestinians in the West Bank.

Israeli prosecutors have charged Yinon Levi, a Jewish settler, with reckless manslaughter following the death of Palestinian activist Awdah Hathaleen in July 2025. This significant legal action marks the first indictment against a settler for the killing of a Palestinian in nearly three years, according to Reuters and Al Jazeera.

Levi is also facing charges for armed trespassing and malicious property damage, which occurred during an altercation when settlers operated an excavator in the Palestinian village of Umm al-Khair. An investigation found that Hathaleen was unarmed during the incident, undermining any claims of self-defense made by Levi, as stated by BBC and Reuters.

Hathaleen, who was featured in the Oscar-winning documentary "No Other Land," was a prominent activist against settler violence in the region. The indictment was described by B'Tselem, an Israeli human rights organization, as "the exception that proves the rule," emphasizing the systemic impunity granted to settlers and soldiers involved in violence against Palestinians. B'Tselem highlighted that since October 2023, at least 1,100 Palestinians, including 240 children, have been killed by Israeli forces and settlers, indicating a troubling escalation in violence, according to BBC and Reuters.

The indictment comes amid an alarming rise in settler violence, with incidents reportedly now averaging 190 per month in 2026. Such violence has been exacerbated by the activities of organized groups like the Hilltop Youth, which operate with impunity in the West Bank, according to analysis from Al Jazeera and BBC.
