  • LIV Golf secures a new lead investor, ensuring financial stability beyond the current season.
  • Players will become majority equity holders in the league, a first for a major global sports league.
  • The agreement is expected to close in September, aiming for a multi-partner model for long-term growth.

LIV Golf has announced that it has secured a new lead investor, marking a pivotal moment for the league after the cessation of funding from Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund (PIF) at the end of the 2026 season. Chief Executive Scott O'Neil confirmed that the agreement with the unnamed investor has been approved by the LIV Golf board and is expected to close in September. This deal will also position players as the majority equity holders, a move that promises to redefine the governance of the league, according to Reuters, Los Angeles Times, and Al Jazeera.

The league has indicated it will move to a schedule of 10 events for the upcoming season, with an even split between international locations and the United States, as confirmed by O'Neil. He stated, "We’re also seeing strong interest from more than a dozen additional parties to potentially serve as minority investors, creating a multi-partner model built for long-term stability and growth." The major focus will be on enhancing the player experience and the overall integrity of the league, emphasizing a player-driven approach moving forward, according to Los Angeles Times and Al Jazeera.

This transformation comes after significant financial backing totaling approximately $6 billion from the PIF since LIV Golf's inception in 2022. The league faced uncertainty with the PIF's announcement to withdraw funding, leading to a critical players-only meeting that aimed to address these concerns before the new investment was disclosed. O'Neil noted that while previous financial support was substantial, the future would be centered around a model that empowers players more directly. "Our next chapter will make our players the majority equity holders in LIV Golf," he asserted, emphasizing the importance of this strategic shift. This new structure aims to provide a sustainable path for the league's growth, as reported by Reuters and Al Jazeera.
