Many young South Koreans are increasingly looking for employment opportunities in Japan due to a chronic shortage of desirable jobs in their own country. Prestigious South Korean firms like Samsung often prefer hiring experienced workers, leaving many graduates without job prospects. In response to this growing demand, Japanese entrepreneur Moe Kasugai established KOREC in 2019, a service designed to connect South Korean job seekers with Japanese employers. At a recent job fair held by KOREC, she expressed her surprise at the struggles some bright South Korean graduates face: “I was surprised that they couldn't find a job because they were so smart,” she said, highlighting the potential for these graduates in Japan's labor market, according to India Times and Reuters.

As of June, South Korea’s youth unemployment stood at 7.0%, while Japan's overall rate was significantly lower at 2.5%. This stark contrast emphasizes the appeal of job opportunities in Japan for South Korean graduates. The South Korean Human Resources Development Service reported that 2,257 young Koreans secured jobs in Japan last year through government-backed initiatives, an increase of 47% compared to previous years, making Japan the leading destination for those seeking overseas employment, according to South China Morning Post and Reuters.

The job fairs in South Korea have attracted numerous employers, including major companies like Canon and Azbil, which seek to tap into the pool of talented South Korean graduates fluent in Japanese. Students have expressed a strong interest in Japan, noting that Korean companies typically prefer hiring experienced candidates, whereas Japanese firms maintain structures that recruit and train new graduates, according to India Times and South China Morning Post.

Despite historical tensions between both nations, evidenced by issues stemming from Japan's past colonial rule, the relationship is evolving positively in terms of employment and social ties. However, challenges remain as Korean professionals, who typically value job mobility for better opportunities, may conflict with Japan's lifetime employment culture.
