A ferry carrying 116 passengers capsized off the coast of Guyana.

The MV Barima capsized near the Pomeroon River while traveling from Georgetown to Port Kaituma, carrying 116 people in total. Authorities received a distress call at 11:01 p.m. on Saturday, prompting active rescue operations led by the Guyanese government, including Prime Minister Mark Phillips who stated that search efforts will continue until all possible rescues are made, according to Al Jazeera and Reuters.

So far, 67 individuals, including 15 children, have been rescued. The vessel was equipped with 250 life jackets, two rigid life rafts, and six inflatable life rafts for emergency situations, according to Los Angeles Times and Reuters. Emergency family assistance centers have also been established to support the families of those on board, as reports continue to emerge about the situation, according to Los Angeles Times.
