New York Mayor Considers Arresting Netanyahu During UN Visit Amid Ongoing ICC Allegations

Credited from: LEMONDE

  • New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani may pursue actions against Netanyahu during the UN General Assembly.
  • Mamdani claims Netanyahu should be tried as a war criminal by the International Criminal Court.
  • The Mayor is consulting legal experts on his authority to arrest foreign leaders.
  • President Netanyahu's office vehemently denies the ICC allegations, labeling them absurd.
  • Public opinion among Democrats is shifting regarding support for Israel.

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani is evaluating the possibility of arresting Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu if he attends the UN General Assembly in September. Mamdani stated he is consulting with the city's legal team to determine what actions he could legally take regarding the potential visit. In an interview, Mamdani emphasized, "Whatever the law allows me to do in New York City, that's what we will do," highlighting the ongoing discussions with the city's lawyers, according to Al Jazeera and Le Monde.

Mamdani, a prominent advocate for Palestinian rights, has previously stated that he believes Netanyahu is a war criminal and belongs in the International Criminal Court (ICC). "I believe that Prime Minister Netanyahu belongs in The Hague," he reiterated, addressing concerns regarding his administration’s stance towards Israeli military actions in Gaza. The ICC has issued arrest warrants against Netanyahu for allegations that include war crimes during military operations, according to India Times and Le Monde.

In response to Mamdani’s intentions, Israeli officials, including Ambassador to the UN Danny Danon, have condemned the mayor's remarks. Danon criticized Mamdani for inciting hostility and emphasized that Netanyahu would attend the UNGA, declaring it would "not change a thing" regarding Israel's legitimacy and right to defend itself. This came amidst escalating tensions and changing public sentiment within the Democratic Party regarding U.S. support for Israel, as highlighted by recent polling, according to Al Jazeera and India Times.

Netanyahu has publicly dismissed Mamdani's threats, suggesting that the mayor harbors animosity towards the United States. He characterized Mamdani's calls for his arrest as a reflection of broader anti-Israel sentiments. This situation underscores a significant political shift within Democratic voter bases, who increasingly express opposition to unconditional support for Israel, suggesting a potential change in the political landscape surrounding U.S.-Israel relations, according to Al Jazeera and Le Monde.
