New Zealand actor Sam Neill, best known for his roles in Jurassic Park and The Piano, has died from pneumonia at the age of 78. His passing occurred at a Sydney hospital, with his family announcing it as "sudden and unexpected." Neill's long-time agent, Philip Grenz, confirmed the cause of death on Thursday, stating that Neill "had valiantly fought and beaten lymphoma" through innovative CAR-T therapy prior to succumbing to pneumonia, according to BBC, Channel News Asia, and CBS News.

Neill's agent elaborated that before his illness, Neill had filmed "four projects back-to-back," which are set to be released in the near future. He also shared that the actor's family plans a private memorial at his farm in New Zealand. This decision reflects Neill's nature as "an intensely private man who loathed a fuss," Grenz stated, according to BBC and Channel News Asia.

Tributes have poured in from a variety of colleagues who praised Neill's character and contributions to the industry. Director Taika Waititi reflected on their work together, saying, "You are so loved and will be sorely missed by us all," highlighting Neill's affectionate nature and connection with others. Additionally, Steven Spielberg expressed his admiration and collaboration during the production of Jurassic Park, stating, "Sam will never be forgotten by us or his many millions of fans around the world," according to Channel News Asia and CBS News.

Neill, who was also a successful vintner with his Two Paddocks wine brand, will be fondly remembered not only for his outstanding performances over a career spanning five decades but also for his humble demeanor and contributions to the New Zealand community. He is survived by his four children and eight grandchildren, underscoring the personal legacy he leaves behind, according to BBC and CBS News.
