  • Over 500 people feared dead after two boats capsize in the Bay of Bengal.
  • Boats were carrying Rohingya refugees from Rakhine State to escape dire conditions.
  • UN agencies demand enhanced search and rescue efforts and action against trafficking networks.

Over 500 people are feared dead after two boats carrying members of Myanmar's Rohingya minority capsized in the Bay of Bengal, according to Indiatimes, Le Monde, and Channel News Asia.

The United Nations, through its agencies International Organization for Migration (IOM) and UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), reflected grave concern over reports of the capsizing, stating that preliminary information indicated the vessels departed from Rakhine State in late June, with around 250 and 280 people aboard respectively. One boat reportedly lost contact shortly after departure, while the other is believed to have sunk off Myanmar's Ayeyarwady coast on July 8 due to hazardous maritime conditions, heightened by torrential rain and flooding in the region, according to Le Monde and Channel News Asia.

Reports underline that the Rohingya community, who have faced persecution and have been living in cramped conditions in Bangladesh's refugee camps, often attempt perilous sea journeys in a desperate search for better living conditions. In light of these risks, the UN warns that if these reports are verified, this tragedy would worsen an already dire situation wherein nearly 300 people had been reported missing or dead in maritime incidents already this year, highlighting the ongoing humanitarian crisis faced by Rohingya refugees, according to Indiatimes and Channel News Asia.

The UN agencies reiterated the urgent need for enhanced search and rescue operations, increased access to asylum, and concrete measures against smuggling and trafficking networks which exploit the desperation of the Rohingya. They commended Bangladesh for its hospitality towards Rohingya refugees but emphasized that sustained international support is critical to addressing the underlying causes of forced displacement impacting these vulnerable communities, according to Le Monde and Channel News Asia.
