Writer E. Jean Carroll has successfully received over $5.6 million awarded to her in a civil case against former President Donald Trump, marking a significant moment in her prolonged legal battle. This sum includes the $5 million jury award plus accumulated interest, and it was disbursed after the U.S. Supreme Court declined to hear Trump's appeal against the verdict, thus allowing Judge Lewis A. Kaplan to release the escrowed funds, according to CBS News and BBC.
The legal case stems from the jury's finding in 2023 that Trump was liable for sexually assaulting Carroll in the mid-1990s in a Bergdorf Goodman department store dressing room and subsequently defaming her on social media. "We are pleased to report that she has received the damages payment the jury awarded her as a result of that verdict," Carroll's attorney, Roberta Kaplan, stated, confirming that the funds were finally released, according to South China Morning Post and Los Angeles Times.
Despite the release of the funds, Trump's lawyers continue to pursue legal avenues aimed at reversing the jury's decision and recently filed another appeal. The former President maintained his denial of Carroll's allegations, suggesting the case is a political maneuver, as reported by India Times and Los Angeles Times.
