A runner was gored in the face as chaos erupted during the San Fermin bull run festival on Saturday, with many others narrowly avoiding serious injury. Six bulls and steers charged through the crowded narrow streets of Pamplona, leading to knocked-down runners and multiple pile-ups during the two-and-a-half-minute run from the pen to the bullring, where the bulls are later killed, according to SCMP, CBS News, and LA Times.
According to reports, the injured runner was pierced by a bull's horn in the face while another black bull broke away early in the 957-yard run, impacting a group of participants. A total of 12 individuals required medical attention for various injuries, according to the University of Navarra Hospital, cited by SCMP, CBS News, and LA Times.
This year's San Fermin festival marks the centenary of Ernest Hemingway's "The Sun Also Rises," which popularized the event worldwide. The last fatality during the bull runs was recorded in 2009, but incidents of gorings and injuries remain frequent, attributed to the presence of novice runners and foreign tourists participating alongside seasoned locals, as noted by SCMP, CBS News, and LA Times.
