A Hungarian court has sentenced an Irish citizen to 14 years in prison for the murder of an American tourist, Mackenzie Michalski, in 2024. Michalski, a 31-year-old from Portland, Oregon, was in Hungary on vacation when she was reported missing on November 5, 2024. She was last seen at a nightclub in Budapest. Police launched an investigation after reviewing security footage, which showed her with the suspect before her disappearance, according to SCMP, Los Angeles Times, and CBS News.
The suspect, identified by the initials L.T.M., was detained two days later on November 7 after confessing to the murder. Investigators revealed that Michalski and L.T.M. met and danced at a nightclub before going back to his rented apartment, where he subsequently beat and strangled her during what was described as an “intimate encounter.” The court stated he did not attempt to help her nor call for assistance, indicating intention behind his actions, as reported by SCMP, Los Angeles Times, and CBS News.
Following the crime, the suspect attempted to conceal it by cleaning the scene and hiding the body in a wardrobe. He subsequently transported the remains to Lake Balaton, approximately 90 miles from Budapest, where he discarded them in a wooded area. Police released videos showing him guiding authorities to the body location. Remarkably, the suspect exhibited premeditated behavior by searching online for ways to conceal a body and the efficacy of police procedures regarding missing persons, according to SCMP, Los Angeles Times, and CBS News.
At the sentencing, the court mandated that L.T.M. serve his time without the possibility of parole and noted that his 1.5 years spent in detention would count towards his sentence. Additionally, he is required to pay approximately 2.5 million forints (about $7,995) in court costs. His attorney has initiated an appeal process against the verdict, as stated by SCMP, Los Angeles Times, and CBS News.
