The Canadian government has named Germany’s TKMS as the preferred supplier for a major submarine procurement, signifying one of the largest defense contracts in the country's history. Prime Minister Mark Carney made the announcement shortly before departing for a NATO summit, underscoring the importance of bolstering Canada's military capabilities amid global tensions. This procurement involves building up to 12 submarines to replace Canada's aging fleet, with a focus on Arctic operations, according to BBC, Al Jazeera, and Los Angeles Times.
This selection of TKMS was made over South Korea’s Hanwha Ocean, with Carney highlighting TKMS's proven capabilities and its role as a supplier for numerous NATO members. "The submarine is proven and capable. It is used widely by our allies," Carney stated, emphasizing that TKMS has supplied submarines to over a third of NATO countries. The memorandum also includes provisions for faster delivery of the submarines, with the expectation that Canada will receive the first four vessels by 2034, according to Los Angeles Times and BBC.
