On Monday night, an explosion in a residential building in Monaco injured three people, including Ukrainian oligarch Vadym Yermolaiev, as authorities termed the incident a “deliberate explosion.” The blast occurred around 9 PM local time, drawing attention to Monaco's extreme security and wealth, with Minister of State Christophe Mirmand calling it “the first time in history, to my knowledge, that such an act has taken place in the principality,” according to South China Morning Post.
Officials stated that the explosive device was left at the building's lobby and contained bolts and buckshot. The explosion left two adults in life-threatening conditions and a 13-year-old with less severe injuries. The injured individuals were reported to be a couple, likely related to Yermolaiev. Prince Albert II condemned the blast as “an odious act,” reflecting the shock among the Monegasque community, according to Al Jazeera and CBS News.
The suspect reportedly fled on foot into France after the incident, and French authorities are actively involved in the search. Video surveillance captured the suspect leaving a backpack at the scene prior to the explosion, and police are analyzing this footage to identify him, as stated by Monaco’s public prosecutor, Stephane Thibault, and reported by South China Morning Post, Al Jazeera, and CBS News.
