  • France records approximately 1,000 excess deaths during a recent heatwave.
  • Most victims are aged 65 and older, with many dying at home.
  • Health officials warn that the true death toll may be higher than reported.

France has reported around 1,000 excess deaths since June 24 due to a severe heatwave that has gripped much of western Europe. The French health agency, Public Health France, indicated that this figure is preliminary and likely an underestimate. The distressing majority of these fatalities involve individuals aged 65 and above, with areas under red alert being especially hard-hit, according to India Times and Le Monde.

The agency highlighted that most deaths occurred at home, particularly in the Ile-de-France region, which encompasses Paris and its suburbs. As Public Health France states, “This observation serves as a reminder of the need for measures of solidarity toward people who are isolated or experiencing profound loneliness,” illustrating the urgent need for community interventions, according to Reuters and South China Morning Post.

This heatwave, marked by intensely high temperatures exceeding 40°C, is reported to be the worst recorded in Europe, significantly exacerbated by climate change. Health Minister Stephanie Rist mentioned that the impacts of this event could continue affecting health for up to ten days after the temperatures have cooled, stressing ongoing concerns regarding public health safety, as indicated by Channel News Asia and Le Monde.
