Israeli forces fatally shot 32-year-old Mustafa Taha Mustafa al-Khatib inside his home during a raid in the village of Sarta, West Bank. Witnesses reported that soldiers broke through the front door, leading to the fatal encounter, where he was reportedly shot multiple times while trying to get dressed after being awoken. His death marks a troubling escalation in the ongoing violence in the region, bringing the total number of Palestinians killed in the West Bank this year to 72, as confirmed by the Palestinian Health Ministry, according to Middle East Eye and Al Jazeera.
Relatives of al-Khatib described the incident as a “cold-blooded execution,” alleging that Israeli troops prevented access to medical aid promptly after the shooting. Eyewitness accounts indicate that al-Khatib had no known affiliations with any armed group. The Israeli military, however, stated that troops fired after the man allegedly threw objects at them, which is contested by family members who assert the immediate circumstances of the raid did not allow him time to react, according to Los Angeles Times and Al Jazeera.
The violent raid comes amidst heightened Israeli military activity in the occupied territories, which has intensified in recent months amid rising tensions and settler aggression. Reports indicate that the environment is increasingly hostile, with reports of escalating violence, as seen in the recent wave of military raids across the West Bank, further amplifying fears amongst Palestinian residents, as noted in Middle East Eye and Los Angeles Times.
