Congo Reports Record Spike in Ebola Cases Amid Continued Funding and Insecurity Challenges

Credited from: ALJAZEERA

  • Congo reports 782 confirmed Ebola cases with a record jump of 72 new infections in a single day.
  • The outbreak has resulted in 181 confirmed deaths, with ongoing monitoring intensifying.
  • The unique Bundibugyo virus strain, unlike previous outbreaks, has no approved vaccine or treatment.
  • Humanitarian crises and funding gaps are complicating response efforts.
  • Contact tracing coverage has dropped sharply, hindering containment strategies.

As of June 14, the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) has confirmed a total of 782 Ebola cases, including 181 deaths, following a significant increase of 72 new infections within a 24-hour period. This marks one of the largest daily jumps reported in the current outbreak, which was officially declared on May 15, 2026. The affected provinces include Ituri, North Kivu, and South Kivu, with the outbreak being attributed to the rare Bundibugyo strain of the virus, which lacks an approved vaccine or treatment, contrary to the more common Zaire strain from previous outbreaks, according to Reuters, India Times, and Al Jazeera.

The DRC's Ministry of Health indicated that the number of cases is likely underreported due to weak contact tracing efforts, which have decreased significantly to just 56.5%. Health officials suggest that community efforts to report suspected cases are increasing, but insufficient funding and ongoing insecurity complicate response actions. The current operational challenges are exacerbated by conflict in the region, leading to the displacement of nearly a million residents, severely affecting contact tracing and medical support, as highlighted by India Times and Al Jazeera.

The Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention has intensified its support, deploying technical experts and resources to affected areas, but reports indicate a critical $21.5 million funding shortfall hindering effective response. Jean Kaseya, director of Africa CDC, emphasized the necessity for urgent mobilization of resources to combat the outbreak effectively, asserting that, “We remain committed to supporting affected countries until transmission is stopped,” according to Reuters, India Times, and Al Jazeera.
