  • Iran's football federation announces the revocation of its World Cup ticket allocation by the U.S.
  • The decision affects fans who had already made arrangements to attend matches.
  • Iranian officials accuse the U.S. of bureaucratic obstructions amid diplomatic tensions.
  • The federation demands FIFA uphold fairness and support during the tournament.
  • Iran's team is set to begin its World Cup campaign against New Zealand on June 15.

Iran’s football federation (FFIRI) has reported that the United States has revoked its allocation of tickets for the upcoming World Cup, just days before the tournament’s start. This decision has left many Iranian supporters unable to attend matches they had planned for, according to FFIRI's statement emphasizing that fans had relied on official processes for arrangements, making travel plans for the competition.

according to Reuters, South China Morning Post, and Al Jazeera.

The revocation comes amid ongoing diplomatic issues between Iran and the U.S., with the FFIRI accusing the United States of implementing "bureaucratic hurdles" that obstruct Iranian support at the World Cup matches. Iran asserts that FIFA rules should allow 8% of tickets for each match to be allocated to participating federations for distribution to fans through official channels. Some fans had reportedly begun purchasing tickets in anticipation of Iran’s matches against New Zealand, Belgium, and Egypt.

according to South China Morning Post and Al Jazeera.

Additionally, FFIRI has criticized the sudden withdrawal of tickets as a violation of principles governing international competitions. They have urged FIFA and tournament organizers to ensure fairness and support for all participating countries, underscoring the necessity for equal treatment of fans. The federation’s concerns are compounded by prior visa issues affecting around 15 support staff who were unable to enter the U.S., prompting Iran to relocate its training base to Tijuana, Mexico.
